PROJECT ABSTRACT

In this concept design of the renovation of the old city district, the so called "Spit" or "Strelka", the authors attempted to create a modern, comfortable and eco-friendly public environment on the site of former river harbor and fair grounds as part of finding the right balance of the "new" and the "old" in the city.

The heart of the structure is the dominating circular form of the stadium located on the grounds. Like ripples on the water, from it stem overlapping zones spreading to the bank lines of the rivers Volga and Oka forming the spit in the place of their juncture.

Special attention was paid to the ground surrounding the protected area of the building of national importance - the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. The project provides for its dominating position on the Spit for and the best view of it from major lookout points.

All proposed solutions and actions taken together will allow for converting the area into a modern, green, appealing and visitor-friendly city park.
